Mari Luz: "Who should I ask why this happened?

It is three hard months since the disappearance of Mari Luz and these last months, which Juan José Cortès and his family have experienced have been especially difficult. As reported by Mari Luz's father himself, it was, "The day my daughter disappeared; the day when I was told that I had to go to the quay (where the body of the little girl was found floating) and now, when I have been told that this Mr Santiago del Valle should have been in prison and not at liberty."

"Who should I ask why all this happened? My daughter should be alive.." In response to the vice-president of the government, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, who called on citizens to maintain their confidence in the police in spite of the many errors committed in this case, Juan José Cortès stated: "If the system works, why is my daughter dead?" Juan José Cortès is well aware that the death of his child is the result of much non-accountability in the Head of the Administration of Justice and the State. However, on the question of whether he is going to hire a lawyer and ask if they will compensate him for the harm which these errors have caused to his daughter, to himself and to his family, he said, "This is not the time....Maybe in the future."

"

Whole life sentence.

The only comfort for Juan José Cortès at this moment, is to ensure that his daughter's murderers pay for what they have done. "That justice is done." When he is asked what would be a fair sentence, he responds quickly: "That my daughter is given back to me, that would be justice! But as that is not possible, then that they never come out of prison!"Mari Luz's father is very clear, he wants the debate on whole life sentence to be re-opened in Spain. He does not understand those who oppose it and states that: "If a man takes away the life of my daughter and he takes mine away for ever, he should pay for ever. This is a preventative solution and not a punishment. There are people who cannot live in society because they could commit the same crime again. Who is to say that if this man comes out of prison in 20 years, he is not going to commit the same crime again?

Remember that Santiago del Valle has committed a whole series of abuse against children, from Seville to Huelva, through Gijon, all while each time fooling the police.

"

The police accused of having tortured the defendant.

Santiago del Valle testified that the police had tortured him to obtain his confessions. It was for these reasons that he later retracted even to the point of denying that he had been in the company of Mari Luz on the afternoon of January 13th. His sister, Rosa del Valle told the judge that on the afternoon in question Santiago had asked her to take him to Carrefour to run some errands and that is what she did. She took him there, her brother not having a driving licence. The retail centre was closed according to her version, and she took him a bit further to another retail zone which was open and left him there. The police has information which contradicts this witness statement and the judge has deemed it as being valid. The last person to see Mari Luz alive, saw her around 16.40, stopped in front of Del Valle's house.

"

The reconstruction of events indicates that Rosa drove her brother with the body of Mari Luz in the boot of her car, as far as the estuary and she waited there while he threw the body into the water. They then returned together to the house in Torrejon. Santiago had just had the time to pick up his wife, Isabel Garcia and for the two of them to hastily leave the town. Remember that the three of them were in the house when Santiago brought the child in, promising a game, for the purpose of sexual abuse.

In fact, towards 18.30, before the police arrived on the scene, a group of relatives of the Cortés family had already burst into the house by force and had taken away documents and other property. At that time, the couple had already fled. After Rosa del Valle's statement, the judge signed an arrest warrent for murder, as stipulated in the detention order at the prison. Even though her degree of participation has not been leaked, she could be considered as co-perpetrator of the murder if she participated in an active way in the illegal confinement and/or the abduction; or as complicit in the murder by her silence.

Santiago del Valle, after having denied everything and accused the police of abuse, asked to be heard again, perhaps knowing already what the judge's decision was concerning his sister. In this second statement, he gave up and again admitted, in view of the evidence revealed, the the facts that he had already accepted and signed in Cuenca. He called the child when he saw her alone because he liked her, but she fell down the stairs and died accidentally: he then went to get rid of the body by throwing it into the estuary.

"

Although the forensic reports are not conclusive about how the child died, given the bad state of the body of Mari Luz, the judge had no doubts and considered the person detained as perpetrator of a murder and sexual assault. She issued a warrant , as in the case of his sister. Both were remanded to the prison in Huelva. In the string of absurdities in this case, the prison has now received Santiago del Valle's admission order for the abuse of his five year-old daughter - two years and nine months detention - which should have been served from March 2006!!! His wife, Isabel Garcia has been admitted to the psychiatric section of Seville prison to serve 15 months for complicity in the context of the abuse committed by her husband on their child. She should also have been imprisoned two years ago.

Fourniret trial: the third day begins

http://www.kidnapping.be/fourniret/index.html

Fourniret appears at his trial without coercion, but refuses to speak.

On Monday morning, Michel Fourniret went, without coercion, to the hearing at the Ardennes Court of Assizes in Charleville-Mézières, where, since Thursday, he is being tried for seven murders, after having been brought by force on Friday when he wanted to boycott his trial. Michel Fourniret, who will be 66 on Friday, is being tried for seven murders of young women or teenagers, preceded by rape or attempted rape, crimes which he has admitted, committed in France and Belgium between 1987 and 2001.

"

On Monday, the third day of the trial, Michel Fourniret stated that he, "confirmed (his) position," only to speak on the allegations on condition that the proceedings were held in camera. "This weekend, the careful thinking which I went through, has led me to confirm my position," stated Michel Fourniret, who had been invited to speak on the first of ten cases for which he is being tried, that of the sexual assault of a 13 year-old Belgian teenager in June 2003 near Namur. (Belgium)

  • "In the case of a public trial, I will only pay lip service. There is a wealth of information that the families can be assured of never having seen," he added.
  • "You have nothing to say, then, on the facts of 26th June 2003?" Gilles Latapie, president of the court, tried again.
  • "I am burning with a desire to comment, but I cannot do it," retorted the accused, who is appearing alongside his wife, who is being prosecuted for one of the murders and for complicity in several others.

The motorist who saved Marie, recounts....

Stéphanie Janton, the motorist who took charge of Marie, who was abducted in Ciney on June 26th 2003 by Michel Fourniret, retraced the journey, which led to Fourniret's arrest before the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Monday.
13 year-old Marie had managed to flee from Michel Fourniret's van where she had been tied up and placed herself in the middle of the road. "At a crossroads, I saw a young girl in the middle of the road, making huge signals," said Mme Janton who stopped, thinking there had been an accident. "She told me:'I have just been kidnapped in Ciney," she continued, noting that Marie was, "frightened, a little lost," and showed abrasions to the wrist. The motorist and Marie cross Fourniret's vehicle, which had done a U-turn after Marie's escape. Recording the registration number will allow his questioning.

"

New victim: A nurse!

On Monday the daily newspaper, Le Soir, reports that in his document, handed to the president of the Ardennes Court of Assizes on Thursday, Michel Fourniret confessed to, "an attempted murder of a health professional," confessing also to the aborted abduction of a nurse in 1994, in the parking area of the AZ-VUB hospital in Jette.

Michel Fourniret notes never having heard of this attempted murder. This case, as told to the head of ,"attempted abduction," in Dinant, has not, to this day, resulted in an indictment, in spite of Monique Olivier's confession. Fourniret's written confession revives this case, comments Le Soir. "The investigating judge, Hanin, will be advised on Monday of M. Fourniret's words, of which we have not yet received official notification from the French legal authorities." said Philippe Morandini, acting head in charge of the case. "Obviously, if M. Fourniret brings new information to a case, so far qualified as an attempted abduction, and not murder, he would be questioned about his claims, and if relevant, would incur a charge which he would answer to before the Belgian authorities." continued Philippe Morandini.

Fourniret: ridiculous clown firmly brought back to reason.

Enfants Kidnappés, 29/03/08

http://www.kidnapping.be/fourniret/index.html

29 mars 2008

"

Ridiculous clown firmly brought back to reason.

On Friday Michel Fourniret was firmly brought back to reason on the second day of his trial before the Ardennes court of Assizes, the magistrates ordering him to stop his, "ridiculous clowning," and to, "come back to reality," and agree to speak for himself. At the start of the hearing, the Attorney General, Francis Nachbar, reacted vigorously to the refusal of the accused to appear voluntarily, which had obliged the president of the court, Gilles Latapie to, "bring by force," the accused, as the law authorises him to do. "You will no longer manipulate people!(....) Every day M. Fourniret you will be at the trial, you will be brought by force," cautioned M. Nachbar, glaring at the accused, on trial for seven aggravated murders of young women or adolescents. There was no reaction from the latter, who stayed on his seat, arms crossed.

"

Stop that insufferable impropriety, those vulgarities, stop once and for all that ridiculous clowning!" added the Attorney General in a loud voice.

In the afternoon, after the lengthy reading of the hundred page indictment, the president, more calmly ,asked the accused - who repeated his wish to have the proceedings heard in camera - to, "come back to the principle of reality," and to speak for himself on the crimes for which he is accused by the police. "We are here for a certain number of weeks with the facts to examine, let us examine them and let your lawyers do their work(.....) We are not at the Star Academy or in whatever television show," stated Gilles Latapie.

"

Monique Olivier: Monique Olivier does not seem unhappy that her husband should take himself as a soap opera, which he describes as, "romantic buffet," in the seven page manuscript for the attention of the families. An insufferable pseudo-literary verbiage in which he describes himself as devoid of humanity. Indeed the clerk of the court, who continues the endless reading of the indictment, provides personality details, attesting to his dangerousness: "incurable, irrecoverable, cynical, without empathy," he is, "a perverted sadist with a super-sized ego." Fourniret seems worried. His wife turns her back on him and looks in vain for a visual anchor.

Addressing Monique Olivier, on trial for complicity, M. Latapie received a frank promise of cooperation . "I will be there every day and will do my best to answer questions," she assured. Relatively inexpressive since the start of the debates, the former nurse, Fourniret's third wife, several times raised her eyes heavenwards or shakes her head while being described in the indictment as, "perverted," who would, "feel a sort of pride in being the accomplice." On Thursday, one of her lawyers stated that she would benefit from the trial - scheduled until the end of May - to, "ask forgiveness," from the victims' families.

"

"stubborn and temperamental," according to her father, she is virtually gifted (IQ of 131) according to one expert, while another assesses her as, "weak, incapable of making decisions," An umpteenth college described her as, "insensitive to the suffering of others," and, "perverted." Monique Olivier is not submissive to Michel Fourniret, "each needed the other in order to validate their fantasies," "each was in turn the instrument and the instrumentalist."

"

Bon week-end, Monsieur Fourniret ! »"

Keeping the spotlight.

At 16.50. when the families seem to be exhausted, the hearing recommences and the president calls on Michel Fourniret. A clever trap into which the other falls, as he wants to keep the spotlight
. He gives a little cough, hesitates, then says he is, "embarrassed," he had decided to boycott the trial, but opts finally for a little speech: "If certain aspects are the object of a request for the proceedings to be behind closed doors from the public, I am inclined to assure my participation in them. As for the others, I cannot involve myself," he announces, chest stuck out like a cockerel in a farm yard. The magistrate confirms that this would be in his interest. Fourniret, thoughtful, raises his eyes to the platform for a second: "We seem to be agreeing...." Magnanimous and very shrewd, Gilles Latapie nods, "There you are, you are thinking carefully.....Have a good weekend, M Fourniret!"

"

In a rare gesture, M Latapie offered the microphone to the families, who are very supportive of each other, in the open hearing on Friday, just before bringing to an end the debates, which will resume on Monday. "The versions of Michel Fourniret and Monique Olivier are often different, the families are waiting for the two accused to participate in the debate in open court," stressed their spokesperson for the occasion, Valérie Leroy, sister of a young 20 year-old woman, killed in August 1988 in La Marne. In front of the journalists, the relatives of the victims then indicated that they had agreed amongst themselves a symbolic pact, "of solidarity," in response to the criminal pact which, according to the charge, had linked the Fourniret spouses. With this pact, revealed in letters seized at the couple's residence, Michell Fourniret committed, on leaving prison in 1987, to kill Monique Olivier's first husband, on condition that she helped him to satisfy his fantasy for sexual relations with young virgins.

On Monday, the case by case examination of the crimes for which Fourniret is charged, begins.

The nine jurors and the three professional judges, who are trying him for the murders of seven young girls, preceded by rape or attempted rape - alongside his wife and alleged accomplice, Monique Olivier - will first of all focus on one of the other three case which did not result in a death. It concerns the sexual assault in June 2003, near Namur, of a Belgian teenager, aged 13. Marie succeeded in escaping from his van, where she had been locked, allowing Fourniret's arrest by the Belgian police, thanks to the noting of the registration number. On Monday, her lawyers will request that she be heard in camera by the court even if there is no question about depriving the public and the journalists of the complete examination of the case, planned for two days, one of them, Me Isabelle de Moffarts, assured AFP. "We have no wish to play M. Fourniret's game," the lawyer stressed, although the latter, (Fourniret) brought by force to the hearing on Friday, for two days did not stop demanding that the proceedings be held in camera, without which he would keep his, "lips sealed."

The former industrial designer, who will be 66 on the 4th of April, admitted the seven murders, but not all of the facts as charged. As well as that the proceedings be held in camera, he posed as a condition of his, "positive participation," the correction of an. "imperfect," indictment, where, "errors have slipped in." Requirements impossible to satisfy. The president of the court, Gilles Lapatie, insisted on, "the fundamental principle of public debate," at the assizes. Finally, after having taken more than half an hour on Friday afternoon to say that he wished to remain silent, Michel Fourniret committed to thinking carefully about the question over the weekend.

"

On their part, the victims' families have clearly expressed their refusal for the proceedings to be held in camera.

"Everybody should know what our children suffered," reckons Jean-Pierre Laville, father of Isabelle, who disappeared in Yonne in 1987 and whose body had been found at the bottom of a well in 2006. The families have agreed to reveal their feelings to the media on the subject of two days when they were badly shaken by the reading of the indictment detailing the rapes and murders committed between 1987 and 2003. Between his refusal to be brought from prison to appear - which led to his being scolded like an immature child by the Attorney General Francis Nachbar - , and the dissemination of a manuscript where he describes himself as, "devoid of all human feeling, Michel Fourniret has not held back on his outbursts. In this text, delivered to the president, who then passed it to the lawyers of the various parties, he mentions, in a jumbled and confused manner, his wish to have a head-to-head with the victims' families or his wish to dispense with their lawyers. "It is a document in which this man, who only loves himself, complains and cries about himself again, it is pathetic." was the reaction of Me Thierry Moser, who is representing in particular the family of Fabienne Leroy, killed in the Marne in August 1988.

The court will examine the Citroën C25 on Monday.

On Monday April 1st, the Ardennes Court of Assizes will relocate to a parking area in Charleville-Mézières to examine the van in which a 13 year-old Belgian teenager was locked and raped in 2003. It is about the sexual assault in June 2003, near Namur (Belgium) of Marie, aged 13, who succeeded in escaping from the Citroën C25, in which she had been locked, allowing Michel Fourniret's arrest by the Belgian police. In order to examine the vehicle and the conditions in which Marie had been held inside before fleeing at a stop sign, the Court of Assizeshas decided, "to move on Monday morning (....) to the parking area of the court house, " as was simply said at the end of the hearing on Friday
.

A Decision of the court.

Questioned by AFP on Saturday, the magistrate responsible for press relations at the trial, Christophe Aubertin, was not in a position to say if this move would take place in camera or publicly. Monique Olivier is not charged with any complicity in this case.
On the legal front, the relocating is only a simple continuation of the debates of the hearing outside the walls of the court room. Restrictions on sound recording or photography thus apply in the same way.
This move is, "a decision taken by the court, not a request expressed by Marie's family," Reginald de Béco, one of their lawyers, stressed.
At this trial, which opened on Thursday and is scheduled for two months, Michel Fourniret is accused of seven murders of young girls, preceded by rape or attempted rape, and his wife Monique Olivier of being the perpetrator of one of the murders and of complicity in several others.

(Le procès Fourniret c'est aussi ça:

The Fourniret trial is also this:

Two paragraphs are devoted here to a squabble between the public service broadcaster, RTBF, and the private TV channel RTL. I haven't bothered to translate them! )

"

(belga)

Witness, "requisitioned."

The dispute concerns a temporary exclusivity for live statements which RTL-TVI has tentatively agreed with a witness in the Fourniret trial. The RTL-TVi has not, in effect, respected th Munich Charter, which demands freedom of access to all information and the use of fair methods of obtaining information. The public channel accusesthe commercial channel of having, "requisitioned," in return for remuneration in the form of payment for travel and accommodation, Michel Fourniret's first victim, Dahina Le Guennan.
The arrangement agreed between her and the private channel, prohibits this witness from speaking to another French community television channel between the 25th and the 27th of March.

The AJP (
Association of Professional Journalists, which has received the complaint) provides responses to questions with the least delay, while reiterating, "the importance that is constituted in the Belgian French Community of the Council of Journalistic Ethics under development for several years with all the players involved. Michel Fourniret: the circus has begun.

"Je suis dénué de tout sentiment humain."

28 mars 2008

I am devoid of all human feeling.

Silent during the hearing, the alleged serial killer describes himself as, "an evil being and devoid of all human feeling," in a document, which he handed to the Ardennes Court of Assizes.

The circus has begun!!! The beast is trying to manipulate the trial. He wants to attract attention. He wants to make a mockery of the unhappiness of the victims' families. He is totally self-centred. Even now, at a time when the victims' families are risking being victimised again, this being has no respect. If every individual has a right to a fair trial, allow me to say that the young girls who passed through the hands of this despicable thing, they have not had that! (Enfants Kidnappés)

"

Silent throughout the hearing, the alleged serial killer described himself as, "an evil being and devoid of all human feeling," in a document which he handed to the Ardennes Court of Assizes and of which AFP has procured a copy. According to its author, the document is intended to justify his wish to remain silent at his trail, which opened in Charleville-Mezières, on Thursday 27th March.

At the opening of the hearing, Michel Fournirte had refused to confirm his identity and hinted that he would not express himself, without (the trial being) in camera.
"Without (the trial) being in camera, lips sealed." With graying beard and electric blue sweater, Michel Fourniret had brandished a small print manuscript prepared in advance before the first question from the president of the Ardennes Court of Assizes, Giles Latapie.
"You play with my last bit of eye control," he joked, hinting that he had difficulty seeing the words, before reading aloud the accused's sentence for the attention of the room.

Michel Fourniret had also refused to expose himself to the flashes of the photographers, who are authorised at a court sitting a photo session before the hearing.

Towards 10.30, he is sitting in the box, facing the relatives of the victims, seated on the public benches.

"

A roll of paper with a ribbon around it.

Standing, arms crossed, Michel Fourniret had not, at first, responded to the questions of the president except with movements of his head, before taking the floor, and having a roll of paper tied with a ribbon passed to him.
"It is a statement which I intend to read to explain the reasons for my decision to boycott the trial", he said. "In the absence of closed doors (in camera) I ask if you would like to read it to the families of the victims."
"It is very nicely done," said the president, taking hold of the document. "I will study it and it will be entered into the debate."
Most seriousand solemn at the very beginning of the hearing, Giles Latopie had assured that, "the court bows with respect and feeling before the victims and their families." " It will be inappropriate to say anything else."

She would like to apologise.

When her questions were directed, Monique Olivier accepted to respond in a clear voice. Born in 1948 in tours, "I was a nurse. Not a profession but as support to families."
Michel Fourniret, who will be 66 years old during this trial, scheduled until the end of May, is being tried for seven murders committed between 1987 and 2001 on young women and adolescents, in France and Belgium, crimes whihc he has acknowledged.
Monique Olivier, 59 years old, is also accused of one of the murders and of complicity in several other cases. She is in line, like him, for a life sentence without parole.
"She has taken stock of the acts she has committed and she wants to apologise, to ask forgiveness," one of her lawyers, Me Jacques Deslandes, stated for the journalists, assuring that Monique Olivier would be present at each hearing.

"

(NouvelObs)"

Failed abduction, near Namur.

The criminal odyssey of the two spouses came to an end in June 2003 with the failed abduction, near Namur, of Marie, (Christian name changed at the request of the family) aged 13, who had fled at a stop sign. The recording of a registration number had allowed the Belgian to arrest Michel Fourniret.
As well as the seven murders (Isabelle Laville, Fabienne Leroy, Jeanne-Marie Desramault, Elisabeth Brichet, Natacha Danais, Céline Saison and Mananya Thumpong) Michel Fourniret is also being tried for attempted rape, a failed abduction and for sexual assault on Marie.
On Thursday, the Belgian journal Le Soir reported that when Michel Fourniret was placed under investigation this month in two other cases of murder in France, the Belgian police reopened its enquiry into the disappearance in 2003 near Paris of little Estelle Mouzin, re-examining the alibi of the alleged serial killer.
In France, Michel Fourniret is in line for a life sentence without parole, with a minimum term of 30 years, Monique Olivier a minimum term of 22 years. (NouvelObs)

Cédric Visart de Bocarmé was a prosecutor in Namur. The enquiry into the disappearance of Elisabeth Brichet was conducted under his authority. Today the trial of the murderer of the little girl begins. A trial of which he who has become the prosecutor general of Liège, expects a great deal. He was a guest of Bel RTL this morning.

"

It is the most important time in the whole case," the prosecutor begins. "The final touch," he continues. "Now that we are going to put together all the pieces of the puzzle and discover what is the extent of the facts" explains a man who hopes, "to learn a lot more." This is because a number of enquiries are still ongoing and new revelations at Charleville-Mézières could speed them up.

"

Me de Bocarmé came back to the eruption of Fourniret into the enquiry into Elisabeth's disappearance: "For me, that was a surprise. It was not at all expected, even though investigators were working for a few months on the Fourniret case. But we had other potential perpetrators. This was still a surprise. After 15 years, we were a little desperate for not having advanced...."

(RTL Info)"

At the time of the arrest, debates were intense about the reasons for such a long,"peace," for Fourniret, who could kill so many young girls without being investigated by the police, whenhe had already been imprisoned for rape in the past. "If he recognises in Fourniret a, "Consummate art for blending into the population," the prosecutor still considers it unimaginable the erasing if Fourniret's criminal record and the failure of communication between the police of neighbouring countries. Today, however, he stresses the creation of an international data bank which will allow the the background of a suspect to be obtained in several countries. (RTL Info)

************Article ends************

Something that absolutely astounds me about this is that Monique Olivier wants to apologise and ask for forgiveness. She has, apparently, taken stock of what she has done and wants to ask for forgiveness. After so many years of helping Fourniret? It now occurs to her to take stock of what she has done? Perhaps I am just cynical and unbelieving, but it seems to me that Monique Olivier is a little late in her realisation of the enormity of these crimes and this is her attempt to lessen the sentence which the court may seek to impose on her.

If I were a parent of one of the young girls that she and Fourniret had violently killed, I don't know if I could trust the sincerity of her remorse or if I could forgive her. For such evil people, forgiveness, like vengeance, would be God's not mine.
That woman deserves to be punished to the full extent that the law allows. May she sit in prison for the rest of her life, with plenty of time to consider what she has done.

Enfants Kidnappés: Kate and Gerry McCann participate in an ITV documentary.

Kate and Gerry McCann participate in an ITV documentary.

As we announced in brief yesterday, Madeleine's parents have taken part in a television documentary to mark the commemoration of the first anniversary of their daughter's disappearance. The cameras have followed the couple since January. In the documentary, the couple talk at length about Madeleine, of the evening she disappeared, of their, "arguido," status in Portugal and of their decision to return to Great Britain. The parents have not received payment for their participation in the one hour programme for ITV. Instead of paying the parents, the channel has paid the sum of £10,000 into the Find Madeleine Fund.

They have also filmed the launch of a campaign looking to introduce an alert system in Europe, when a child disappears, in the style of the Amber system in the USA. This system would allow the authorities to demand air time from television and radio channels each time a child disappears. ..(NDLR: we imagine that would onyl involve alerts in cases of proven abduction by a stranger....otherwise, in Belgium, excluding all under-age runaways, nothing but been 451 cases of parental abduction last year, If the European Amber system does not limit itself to single kidnappings by one or more strangers, there would be, in Belgium, a little more than one alert a day!!! France being 80 times bigger than Belgium, the calculation is quickly done...if everything were implemented at European level ...we would be faced with several alerts daily.)

Kate and Gerry were filmed in their house in Rothley, Leicestershire and the cameras should accompany them to Washington in the United States, where the couple plans to continue their campaign. The ITV cameras will also be present in Brussels when Madeleine's parents go to support the project. Mentorn Media's producer, Stev Anderson, stated: "In the midst of the controversy, what must not be forgotten, is that th little girl is still missing and that the family has done its best to find her. They are determined to do everything they can to ensure that what happened to Madeleine does not happen to another child."

************Article ends. ************

I don't very often add comments to these articles, but I will add just a brief note, or rather a simple question to this one. I have already, in a previous post, wondered how much information would have been available for an alert, on the night Madeleine disappeared. Look out for a small, blonde child, wearing white, no pink, pyjamas, accompanied by a man with an egg-shaped face with hair. No vehicle description. And a photo? The most up-to-date photo of Madeleine did not appear until, what was it, twenty-three days after she disappeared?

Anyway, I digress from my simple question for Kate and Gerry.

Q: On the evening that Madeleine disappeared, what would have been more useful?

a) An Amber alert?

b) A babysitter?

I have read elsewhere, that Kate and Gerry want to do their best to, "stop," child abdcuctions. Stop child abductions? It ain't gonna happen. As we have seen in the Enfants Kidnappés report above, in Belgium alone there were 451 abductions by parents last year. Would those have been prevented by an Amber alert system? I think not. So, trying to stop them may be like doing a King Canute!

So, if we can't stop abductions, what can we do? Well, we can do our best to prevent them. Abduction by absent parents may be rather difficult to prevent; if a parent has right of access, then legally the risk has to be taken. Abduction by stranger(s)? How to do our best to prevent them? Here are just a few suggestions, which are probably common sense to most parents, even if Clarence Mitchell says that we Brits all leave our children on heir own.

  • Make sure you know where your children are.
  • Keep the children in your sight at all times when out and about.
  • Never leave very young children on their own, especially in an unlocked building.
Remember, if you cannot see the building where your children are, you are probably too far away to know if they are choking, vomiting, or have had a serious accident.

In a holiday apartment like those in Praia da Luz, if parents are in the apartment while children are sleeping, it would be rather difficult for an abduction to take place. If the patio doors and the front door are locked and the windows have shutters, which cannot be opened from the outside (an attempt creates a horrendous din apparently) then I would have thought that abduction would be close to impossible. So, if you go on holiday to PDL, especially if your apartment is outside the Mark Warner complex, the night crêche is useful as is the babysitting service, provided by the nannies whom your children will probably have met at the daytime crêche: not strangers then!

Remember folks. In the UK, there is no minimum age for leaving children on their own. However, the law does state that should you do so and your children suffer significant harm as a consequence, you will be held responsible and may be fined or sent to prison, depending on the level of harm to the child.

And lastly, "to ensure that what happened to Madeleine does not happen to another child," never leave your children alone. Can the McCanns possibly be stupid enough to think that an Amber alert system is the way to deal with situations where parents leave their children on their own? God help us if that's the average level of awareness of our UK doctors!

A roll of paper tied with a ribbon

This morning I read that on the first day of his trial at the Ardennes Court of Assizes, Michel Fourniret presented the court with a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. Important and special documents are presented thus. I have photographs of my daughter and a few years later, my son, proudly holding a roll of paper tied with a ribbon, and I look at those photos with love and pride.

Yesterday Michel Fourniret held a roll of paper tied with a ribbon, which he presented to the court, as though it were a diploma, words important enough to be tied with a ribbon.

Tied with a ribbon. A little girl's hair is tied with a ribbon. A little girl of maybe 12 years old, just leaving childhood behind and entering that phase of becoming a young woman. Just such a young woman was Elisabeth Brichet. Perhaps Elisabeth saw herself as too old, too grown-up, to be wearing a ribbon in her hair. And perhaps Elisabeth's parents were looking forward to that time when they could hold a photograph with love and pride, of their daughter holding a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. But little Elisabeth crossed the path of Michel Fourniret and there would be no more photos, a young life extinguished for the fantasies of a man the world would be better off without.

Michel Fourniret presents his evil in a roll of paper tied with a ribbon. Within that document, it is said that Fourniret describes himself as, "un être mauvais et dénué de tout sentiment humain" - an evil being, devoid of all human feeling. I read that he told his victims, "I am worse than Dutroux." Even now, with the families of his victims there in the court, being forced to live through the stories of how their loved ones were taken from them, Michel Fourniret presents his evil deeds with pride in a roll of paper tied with a ribbon.

The report in Enfants Kidnappés describes Fourniret as, "La bête," the beast. I don't have a word to describe such an evil person. To me, he is not worthy of being called an animal because animals do not kill members of their own species for pleasure. I have no way of understanding how a living thing could look like a human being, walk, talk, breath, eat, like a human being and yet have none of the natural characteristics of any living creature.

Sometimes I forget that I am totally against the death penalty.

My thoughts and prayers are with those families who are sitting through the trauma of this trial, being there for their loved ones, whose lives were taken. Theirs is the love and theirs is the pride that they will face the monster and see justice for all the rolls of paper tied with ribbons, which they will never see.

Isabelle, Fabienne, Jeanne-Marie, Elisabeth, Natacha, Céline, Mananya, Farida

As I was reading through the list of who had visited my blog today, where they were located and what search words they had used, I noticed that someone had been searching the name Céline Saison. When I read that I realised that these young girls and women, whose lives were taken violently by Michel Fourniret, were just lost in the articles I had posted, almost like incidentals in this courtroom drama that is Michel Fourniret.

So, here are their names and how old they were when they crossed the path of that monster Fourniret and were tragically lost to their families.

Elisabeth Brichet: 12 years old

Natacha Danais: 13 years old

Jeanne-Marie Desramault: 22 years old

Farida Hellegouarch

Isabelle Laville: 17 years old

Fabienne Leroy: 20 years old

Céline Saison: 18 years old

Mananya Thumpong: 12 years old

May this trial and its conclusion bring some peace to the families of these young women.
